Biz leaders take home top awards
BurnabyNow • By Julie MacLellan, staff reporter November 8, 2004
They came to celebrate the best of Burnaby's best.
The Burnaby Board of Trade hosted a gala Casablanca-themed evening at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Thursday night to recognize the crŠme de la crŠme of city business.
The 2004 Burnaby Business Excellence Awards recognized winners in eight categories: Community Spirit, Community Service, Business Innovation, Entrepreneurial Spirit, Newsmaker of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Business of the Year (small business) and Business of the Year.
"We are celebrating excellence in its purest form," said Bala Naidoo, chair of the Burnaby Board of Trade, in a message from the board.
"But, ultimately, our goal here tonight is to raise the overall standards of quality in Burnaby's business community. It is critical to continue to assess ourselves and regularly raise the bar of excellence if we are to achieve and retain a competitive edge in a world that has dramatically improved its quality performance."
'Quality' is the key for this year's Business of the Year award winner, McDonald's Restaurants. The board of trade notes that the company is committed to a core operating philosophy of "quality, service, cleanliness and value."
The board also recognized McDonald's for its contributions to the local community.
In Burnaby, the corporation supports the Class Act program - a program designed to recognize student leadership - and runs Small Fry soccer clinics in conjunction with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Ronald McDonald House charities have also given more than $57,000 in grants to Burnaby organizations.
For Business of the Year (small business), quality service and community involvement were also key.
Gord-Ron's Auto Metal, established in the 1960s, now sees more than $3 million in sales annually. The board of trade notes that its owner and staff spend many hours in the community, dedicating time to such initiatives as the Stream of Dreams, Canada Day festivities, South Burnaby Neighbourhood House car rally and the 24-Hour Relay for the Kids.
Norm Blain, CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade, noted the city's business community is being strengthened by business people working together with a common goal.
"Thanks to people working together and getting involved in our dynamic organization, we have become a business community that is held in high regard locally, regionally, nationally and, yes, even internationally," he said in a message.
That spirit of working together is reflected in a number of the winners.
The Community Spirit Award was captured by the Edmonds Town Centre Business and Community Association - a group of retail businesses, service providers and community members.
The group has been meeting since 1999 and incorporated in 2002 with a mission to create, improve and sustain economic growth and development in the area. They have sponsored many community events, including the Edmonds community cleanup, Canada Day celebrations and the Santa Claus Parade.
The Community Service Award was presented to the Stream of Dreams Murals Society. The group was formed in 1998 when a little girl and her mother, saddened by a toxic spill in Byrne Creek that killed 5,000 fish, were inspired to bring them back to life through 'Dreamfish' - wooden fish painted by school children. The program has seen nearly 20,000 participants.
A similar community-based effort can be seen in the work of Pacific Assistance Dogs Society, which captured the award for Business Innovation.
For the past 17 years, the group has been providing service and hearing dogs for people living with a range of disabilities. It's the only fully accredited assistance dog training school in country that offers training to the dogs and their new owners - and it's supported entirely through non-government grants, fundraising and corporate sponsorship.
Mayor Derek Corrigan noted that the finalists represent an "impressive array" of companies and groups.
"Burnaby businesses are world leaders in cutting-edge fields including software design, power systems and biotechnology. We are also pleased to see so many smaller 'homegrown' Burnaby businesses that have become success stories," he said in a message.
Info Touch Technologies, the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award winner, is one of those leading the way in high-tech, providing kiosk software and personal financial services through secure kiosk networks. It's won accolades that include the Deloitte and Touche Fast 50 and 500 awards, as well as the Profit 100 award.
The Business Person of the Year, meanwhile, is one of those 'homegrown' success stories. Sandra Wilson started Robeez Footwear Ltd. in the basement of her home 10 years ago, and its annual revenues now exceed $10 million. It's been recognized by Profit Magazine and iParenting Magazine and won Apparel B.C.'s 2004 Export Award.
Both were finalists for the Newsmaker of the Year award as well - an award captured by Metropolis at Metrotown and Metrotown Centre. Events such as an Avril Lavigne concert and Vancouver Idol and community efforts such as the Student Street Squad and a retail marketing management program developed with BCIT have kept the shopping centre in the headlines all year.
The Burnaby Board of Trade also saluted Brian Kask of Curtis Lumber with its annual Hall of Fame Award.
