WorldCom’s Web Enabled E-Government Kiosks
July 11, 2001

As government agencies are being asked to do more with less funding and available manpower, many are turning to technology and paperless applications to increase productivity, enhance communications and reduce overall costs. WorldCom’s Internet kiosks have the capabilities, applications and features necessary to address these needs and turn the power of e-government into reality.
Through its marketing agreement with Info Touch Technologies, WorldCom is able to provide access to a variety of multimedia applications by virtue of a portable kiosk instead of a laptop or personal computer. This is essential to government agencies serving personnel and customers who do not own or currently utilize the technology. Public Internet kiosks are also beneficial to agencies, that have multiple offices or personnel constantly moving locations.
“We not only see Web enabled kiosks saving government agencies equipment and management costs, but improving services, access to information and communications between agencies, personnel and citizens,” said Jerry Edgerton, senior vice president WorldCom Government Markets. “We anticipate the video e-mails and conferencing capabilities will be especially popular with the service men and women stationed away from loved ones. Not only will they be able to see pictures of family and friends, But communicate and see them in real time video.”
Basically a stationary PC designed for public use, Internet kiosks are self-contained and arrive at government facilities programmed with the applications, software, hardware and connectivity necessary to meet the unique requirements of each agency. The Web enabled kiosks can provide users access to:
Text, video and photo e-mail
Bill payment
Voice-over-Internet (VoIP)
Video conferencing
Tax services
Easy access to purchasing prepaid calling cards
Electronic forms
Convenient access to government support sites and online community resources.
Internet access kiosks will connect directly to WorldCom’s network architecture, allowing users to take advantage of the company’s global IP network, and industry-leading, secure dial and dedicated Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. Access to WorldCom’s networks can also be achieved through a variety of access methods including DSL, Wireless Internet, satellite and dial up. Info Touch, a leading kiosk technology company, will provide the kiosk hardware and software.
Due to the breadth and scale of its interoperable, local-to-global network infrastructure and a wide range of access options, WorldCom can deliver both stand alone and hybrid networking solutions to meet its customer’s specific application, location and mobility requirements.
For additional information on WorldCom and its Web enabled kiosks, email the Enterprise account teams at e-solutions@wcom.com
