Virtual kiosks one-stop shop for bill payments, cellphone cards, WiFi access

Info Touch Technologies Corp., Mac’s convenience stores join forces for a wireless wonderland

Vancouver Sun • April 26, 2005 - BY BRIAN MORTON VANCOUVER SUN

Burnaby-based Info Touch Technologies Corp. is launching a new service in the Lower Mainland — a “virtual kiosk” at a convenience store where you can pay many of your bills whenever you want.

The Internet kiosks have been set up in the Lower Mainland’s 32 Mac’s Convenience Stores — the first such kiosks in Canada, Info Touch said Monday.

“We feel really, really blessed to be in this partnership,” company CEO Hamed Shahbazi said while launching the service at a Burnaby Mac’s store.

“Now you can go to your closest Mac’s convenience stored and do your banking,” he said.

According to the 30-year-old Shahbazi, the kiosks allow customers to walk into the Mac’s store and, for a two-dollar fee, pay bills, recharge cellphone time cards, purchase Western Union money orders, and WiFi access — all at one location.

Customers can also send video emails and photos at the kiosk, which is called ZapLink.

As part of Monday’s launch, Shahbazi conducted a couple of transactions at the kiosk, including paying a phone bill.

Shahbazi, whose company already operates about 500 kiosks in 25 states south of the border, said he hopes to eventually have them in the rest of B.C. and throughout Canada.

“You just have to think, ‘Where’s my closest Mac’s?’ That’s the power of the brand.”

Shahbazi said that about 220,000 customers in the U.S. use their kiosks monthly, creating about $6 million in gross revenues in 2004 with the service.

Each kiosk costs about $10,000 to install, he added, but it’s money well spent.

“A year ago we were in less than 200 locations, with probably 100,000 transactions,” he said. “But growth has been pretty incredible. We expect to have 500,000 U.S. customers next year at this time.”

Shahbazi said that there are three million Canadians who now pay their bills in person at a bank or affiliated store.

Kim Trowbridge, vice president of Mac’s, western division, said at Monday’s launch that the company wants to offer as many services as it can at their convenience stores.

“If they [customers] want to use it as a cafe, they can. If they want to make transactions, they can,” he said.

Trowbridge said he hopes the kiosks will help Mac’s become a “community-based full-service stop.”

He also said that if the kiosks draw customers who buy other products at Mac’s, so much the better. “The fact that [ZapLink] customers are on the site, we have an opportunity to sell.”

Michael Kuhlmann, vice president of business development for FatPort, a wireless Internet service provider, said he expects the ZapLink kiosks will do well, because “wireless access on the go is something more and more people are needing.”
