Alimentation Couche-Tard Expands ZapLink E-Services Program

BURNABY, BC -- Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. plans to expand its U.S.-based ZapLink e-services program into the Canadian market. Initial deployments will be in 34 of the company's Vancouver-area Mac's Convenience Stores Inc.
Info Touch Technologies Corp. will deploy and manage the Canadian network of ZapLink e-service terminals. Powered by Info Touch's industry Surfnet Premiere software, the ZapLink network was launched in Phoenix, Ariz., in 2001 by The Circle K Corporation, which operates 1,663 convenience stores in 16 states. ZapLink e-service terminals are now operating in two states, enabling customers to perform a wide range of transactions--from bill payments to mobile content purchases--using cash and credit cards.
Couche-Tard acquired Circle K in December 2003 from ConocoPhillips Corporation, making it the fourth-largest convenience store operator in North America with a combined network of 4,672 stores.
Circle K's ZapLink lottery kiosk was one of the ideas featured in the 2003 version of the "Ideas 2 Go!" videotape and DVD. The lottery kiosk was a joint venture between Circle-K, Info Touch Technologies Corp., GTECH Corp. and the California Lottery Association. It was the first time in the world that Internet protocol was used to communicate between lottery servers and a customer, allowing a consumer to interact with a touchscreen environment and purchase a lottery ticket.
Mac's and Info Touch will receive recurring transactional revenues from applications such as WiFi, bill payment, mobile content (ring tones, graphics and games), prepaid wireless, long-distance, money order and money transfer.
"Mac's has enjoyed working with Info Touch for the last 4 years on various in-store Internet-enabled kiosk projects," said Kim Trowbridge, Couche-Tard's vice president of western Canada. "Mac's is optimistic that this technology can add significant value to its retail operations and is working closely with Info Touch to formulate an offering that will not only delight Mac's customers but also drive bottom-line benefits."
Hamed Shahbazi, chairman and CEO of Info Touch, added, "Info Touch has been creating an e-services strategy for the Canadian convenience store industry for quite some time now. We believe we have put together a powerful array of self-service applications which should at maturity rival any existing product category in the convenience store today."
