Ideas 2 Go: Circle K's ZapLink Is a 'Queue-Buster'

NACS Daily • January 21, 2004

MODESTO, CA -- Last fall, Circle K introduced the world's first Internet-enabled lottery kiosk at test stores in California, giving lottery players a more robust entertainment experience and reducing lines at the cash register to ensure that all customers continue to have fast transactions.

Developed by the ConocoPhillips Innovation Group and its technology partners, the ZapLink kiosk is proving to be a powerful queue-buster--and a lot more.

Circle K's lottery kiosk was one of the ideas featured in the 2003 version of the "Ideas 2 Go! videotape and DVD. NACS debuted "Ideas 2 Go!"--a video tour that profiles emerging ideas and concepts in the convenience store and petroleum-marketing industry--in 1994.

The most recent "Ideas 2 Go!" was screened during the NACS Show 2003 in Chicago. Because of member requests for more information about the ideas profiled, NACS Daily will highlight an innovative strategy shared by these industry leaders each week.

The lottery kiosk was a joint venture between Circle-K, Info Touch Technologies Corp., GTECH Corp. and the California Lottery Association. It was the first time in the world that Internet protocol was used to communicate between lottery servers and a customer, allowing where a consumer to interact with a touchscreen environment and purchase a lottery ticket.

"The advantage to the ZapLink kiosk is that it's a self-service product; it's away from the front of the store; it gives the added advantage of being able to have the player go over and do the purchase themselves without holding up the line for people who are making purchases," said Jim Breindel, GTECH's retail business manager.

The ability to purchase lottery tickets at a kiosk takes "the kind of entertainment value of Las Vegas and all the rich media and entertainment and fun" and brings it to the user experience when purchasing a ticket, added Hamed Shahbazi, chairman and CEO of Info Touch.

And lottery tickets are just the beginning. Using Internet protocol and a single high-speed communications line, ZapLink provides a growing list of services that are convenient for customers and profitable for convenience store operators.

"Within the convenience industry, if you sell the Cricket phone that's about it when it comes to income. The consumers pay their bills in other ways. What we did is we developed a model using our ZapLink Internet kiosk where Cricket customers can come into the store [and] pay their [phone] bill in cash," said Scott Templeton, group innovation manager at ConocoPhillips Corp. "Who would have thought a year ago that we would have run almost $16 million in Cricket bill-pay funds through our kiosk network in about 12 or 13 months?"

"Everyone wants to be able to do everything quicker; they want more one-stop shopping capabilities. A thing like ZapLink allows them to come into a retail environment and very quickly do a number of transactions. The advantage to retailers is that they can dedicate their labor to other functions in the store while the consumer actually is making his or her own purchases," said Breindel.

"The great thing about ZapLink for our store people is it hasn't required a lot of change....It does not require a lot of our clerk intervention to sustain the offer and to make it work," added Templeton.
